Mathematics

What do we want children to learn?

At Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp CofE Primary School, we endeavour to teach our children a rich and progressive curriculum. We believe that developing a child's ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems are important life skills.

We will give children real-life learning experiences and opportunities to enable them to be confident in all aspects of life; with this in mind, we endeavour to ensure that children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude, and a deep understanding that will stay with them for life.

Our children will thrive upon conquering the challenges and puzzles that mathematics will bring and not be afraid to make mistakes.

Our aim is for children to leave as confident, skilled and resilient mathematicians, who understand that mathematics is a fundamental part of everyday life in our ever-changing world.

How do we teach Mathematics?

To achieve our aims, lessons are planned to ensure children are challenged and motivated, enhancing their love for learning. Children are provided with the best resources possible; enabling staff to make lessons practical, engaging and active. We provide constant support for our children and through this engagement all children are able to achieve and reach for their goals with confidence.

Teachers model and instruct on the key skills and share key knowledge for each lesson, then allowing children time to practise, investigate and develop independently, while offering support where needed.

We currently use White Rose Maths in Key Stage 2, but over the next three-years we will be transitioning to use the NCETM mixed-aged materials. In Key Stage 1 the NCETM materials will be introduced from September 2025. Mastering Number programme will be introduced to teach EYFS but also to provide fluency lessons in Key Stage 1. In Key Stage 2, fluency will be planned using the Ready to Progress Criteria.

To support learning at home, we provide all children will access to Times Tables Rockstars and Numbots. This allows children to be confident with some of the fundamental calculation skills.

On leaving Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp CofE Primary School, children will:

  • Clearly explain their reasoning and justify their thought processes
  • Quickly recall facts and procedures
  • Be flexible and fluid to move between different contexts and representations of mathematics
  • Have the ability to recognise relationships and make connections in mathematics
  • Be happy, confident, articulate and autonomous learners with a life-long passion for learning
  • A mathematical concept or skill has been mastered when a child can show it in multiple ways, using the mathematical language to explain their ideas, and can independently apply the concept to new problems in unfamiliar situations.
