Computing
What do we want children to learn?
At Ashbury CE Primary School we aim to prepare children for an ever changing technological world through an engaging, fun and evolving computing curriculum.
Rooted in our school values, our children will be –
- Excited by the wonders of technology, confident with their digital literacy and use these to enrich their lives. (Responsibility)
- Determined, creative computational thinkers and problem solvers. (Perseverance)
- Responsible, safe and kind communicators online using various types of technology (Compassion)
We want children to not only know how using different technologies can improve our lives but also how essential computing is for the world of work and communication with one another. We teach computing using Purple Mash which provides a progressive scheme ensuring that knowledge and application of that knowledge is built upon things previously learnt.
Children at Ashbury are provided with a wide variety of opportunities to increase their knowledge of potential dangers online. We ensure children learn and discuss what it means to behave respectfully and why this is important.
How do we teach Computing?
To achieve our aims, lessons are planned to ensure children are challenged and motivated, enhancing their love for learning. We use Purple Mash lessons plans and software to deliver the national curriculum computing objectives. Children are provided with the best resources possible; enabling staff to make lessons practical, engaging and active. (chromebooks for each child in the class, ipads, interactive whiteboards, beebots) We are continually trying new ways to engage, excite and educate children about the digital world (e.g. VR headsets, BeInternetLegends, Project Evolve, busy things etc.)
We provide constant support for our children and through this engagement all children are able to achieve and reach for their goals with confidence. Children access digital technology at least once a week from early years right through to the end of KS2.
At Ashbury CofE Primary School, computing is taught one a week every term of the year. We follow the National Curriculum and mainly use the units from Purple Mash across a two year rolling timetable ensuring that all areas of computing are covered evenly. Online safety is taught in a discrete unit every year, during online safety day and also revisited throughout the year within other lessons where IT is being used.
On leaving Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp CofE Primary School, children will:
- Be able to understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
- They will be able to analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated [practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
- They will be able to evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.
- They will be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
