French

What do we want children to learn?

At Ashbury CE Primary School, we endeavour to instil a love of language through the teaching of French. We believe that children should learn about the traditions and cultures of other countries. Through the teaching of French we hope to foster our children’s curiosity about the diverse world around them. Using our chosen scheme, Language Angels, our aim is to develop the confidence and competence of each child in the foreign language they are learning. Our goal is for them to be passionate, curious and to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities when they finish the primary school phase of their education. By the end of primary school, we hope to equip children with a solid foundation of French to support them in their future study of the subject.

How do we teach French?

We will help pupils develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the five key language skills necessary for learning French: speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar. We aim to ensure that pupils of all abilities develop solid foundations in these key language learning skills - properly preparing them for the next stage of their language learning journey. These skills will develop children’s ability to understand what they hear and read and enable them to express themselves in speech and writing. We will extend their knowledge of how language works and explore the similarities and differences between French and English. We will also help strengthen their sense of identity through learning about culture in other countries and comparing it with their own.

French is taught weekly in KS2. The French units of work have been carefully selected from our chosen scheme of work, Language Angels, and have been mapped out on a 2-year rolling programme. French teaching involves listening to words, phrases and songs; reading words and phrases; writing words and phrases and learning key grammar rules for French.

On leaving Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp CofE Primary School, children will:

Progress will be shown through children knowing more and remembering more. Children are continually assessed throughout the year to ensure they are on track to reach the Age Expected Standard or better by the end of the academic year. We regularly monitor children’s needs to ensure the necessary support for pupils is put in place. Teachers will assess children in French and track Attainment and Progress using FFT (Family Fischer Trust) Aspire. Teachers will monitor how children are progressing throughout French units and ensure children are developing the relevant skills and knowledge to reach KS2 expectations.
