Physical Education

What do we want children to learn?

At Ashbury CE Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all children are healthy, happy and active learners, who are able to make healthy choices and understand the importance of leading a physically active lifestyle in our ever-changing world.

We aspire for our children to develop a lifelong desire to participate in physical activity and sport, no matter their ability. Children will challenge themselves to build on prior knowledge and skills in order to know more and remember more so that they can fulfil their absolute potential. We actively encourage all children to participate in personal challenges and competitions, with a focus on the development of skills, perseverance and sportsmanship.

Our P.E. curriculum is crafted to provide learners with high-quality teaching and inclusive sporting opportunities that engage all pupils. We aim to immerse pupils in a culture that inspires them to embrace physical activity, fostering an enjoyment of PE, encouraging mutual support and helping each individual achieve their personal best.

Our curriculum encourages a positive growth mind-set, instilling the belief that with determination and resilience anything can be achieved. Our children will embrace our core values of compassion, perseverance and responsibility, through all PE and sporting opportunities we offer. By living out our value of being ‘United Together’, pupils will learn the value of collaboration, cooperation and teamwork, along with an appreciation for fairness and equality in play, embedding these lifelong values into their experiences.

How do we teach Physical Education?

At Ashbury, we are committed to promoting physical activity and enhancing the healthy lifestyles of our pupils. To achieve our aims, lessons are planned to ensure children are challenged and motivated, enhancing their love for learning. Teachers model and instruct on the key skills and share knowledge for each lesson, then allowing children time to practise, investigate and develop independently, while offering support where needed.

We follow TA Sports Stars scheme of work. This approach allows each sport to be taught twice over the academic year. The aim of the first unit of learning is to begin to explore the knowledge and skills needed to carry out the sport successfully. The aim of the revisited unit is to allow the opportunity for children to further progress their knowledge of skills in a familiar way.

All lessons begin with warm up stretching and a game, followed by two progressive skills based activities. At the end of each unit, children compete in tournaments.

We exceed the recommended physical activity lessons through two PE lessons a week, forest school sessions, outdoor provision and active lunchtimes (led by our playground leaders) and a variety of extracurricular clubs, including: hockey, cricket, fitness and running and football.

At Ashbury, every child receives two hours of PE a week, spread across two lessons. We follow TA Sports Stars scheme of work, however, teaching staff will assess the children’s learning throughout a unit of work in order to build upon knowledge of skills and any gaps in the revised unit of work. Each lesson will consist of stretching, a warm up game and two skills based activities (which are sport specific). In every lesson, children will use age appropriate, sport specific equipment; enabling staff to make lessons practical, engaging and active.

On leaving Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp CofE Primary School, children will:

be inspired to engage in a wider range of sports through high-quality, engaging and enjoyable teaching. Our lessons will motivate pupils to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, and will allow pupils to thrive in competitive competition – this will be achieved through trust wide enrichment events and in school tournaments. Pupils will be equipped with the skills and enthusiasm for sport that will foster their development into happy and healthy adults, making use of the knowledge gained through PE. Pupils will leave Ashbury physically confident and will learn personal skills and values such as perseverance, compassion, fairness and respect as well as becoming self-directed learners who lead active and fulfilling lives.

The subject leader plays a crucial role in monitoring and enhancing the quality of PE and learning. This involves conducting pupil voice sessions, learning walks and reviewing samples of pupils’ performance.
